About:Biography
Dirk Moelants was born in Antwerp (Belgium) in 1971. He studied musicology at the University of Ghent. After his studies he worked as a researcher at the Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music (IPEM) of the department of musicology at Ghent University. In 1995 he received a grant for a doctoral dissertation on the perception of rhythm in music and in 2002 he obtained his Ph.D. with a dissertation entitles "A model for rhythm perception applied to the music of the 20th century". He is currently working as assistant at the department of musicology of the same university. In his reseaerch he concentrates on the interplay between music theory and music psychology with a special interest in aspects of music performance. Besides his scientific activities he studied viol with Wieland Kuijken at the royal conservatory of the Hague, where he obtained his master's degree in music performance in 2001. As a musician he is open to new experiences, often playing lesser-known repertoire from the 16-18th centuries, but also experimenting with different styles of contemporary music. Thus he is not only active in several early music ensembles, but e.g. also with the multicultural chamber orchestra Olla Vogala and the contemporary music project S-M-F. Dirk Moelants regularly publishes articles in various scientific journals and is also the editor of the electronic appendix of the Journal of New Music Research. | ||
